Thank you but I have run the FixIt many times, when it has finished the message just says process has finished. The problematic update is KB2977629: MS14-052 - Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: September 9, 2014. I now see two options (perhaps the community can come up with other ideas): 1. For the time being I've hidden this KB.

I would have tried re-installing IE from standalone, but I think this strategy would fail, as it is very unlikely that the, retrieved IE (after uninstall), is damaged.
