Thanks to gHacks for sharing it... I'll try this one out, or search for another that might work on Win 7. I've been trying to find the time to confirm on my machines, but this looks good. I also can confirm that after the July 2015 updates, the Notification went missing and, going forward, I did not install any further WU "patches" based on the various AskWoody patch

After rebooting the machine, the notification icon returned. I suppose the same action GWX program's "disabling the OS upgrade" option does. Microsoft has removed many useful features from Windows 8 but thanks to 3rd party software developers, we can get them back in the OS. check over here Instead we are bombarded by recommended updates for wrong OS and Windows 10 related updates disguised as security updates.

In regards to losing my update history I encountered that problem back in July also and mentioned this in numerous threads here, but in my case I did nothing more than
A manual installation can be misidentified (is that a word?) by WU. My own diagnosis is that the problem was first introduced by KB3065987 in the JUL 2015 updates (but went unnoticed until August when I wondered why no notify appeared for updates In addition to that, a "Windows Host Process" shows without an icon. It never notifies me about new updates and I always have to manually check for updates using Windows Update main window. If you want it to automatically start with Windows, you can add its shortcut to Windows startup list. The only clue I have is that in TaskManager, when running Windows Update, "TrustedInstaller" runs initially but after a few minutes, an instance of "svchost.exe" takes over.
