I may go quiet after this post. I had to set my wireless network adapter "Wireless Mode" to 802.11 a/b. This is important and also necessary to make all the changes to take effect. AT SCHOOL: I'm not sure where the main setup is, but my connection is strongest and only usable in the first couple of rows. check over here

I was surprised it worked actually as I've tried various simple things like this and couldn't get it to appear. Solution: dump the previous Win 8.1 working network, then reestablish the connection from scratch but this time switch the laptop search into a new (different) radio channel. I then tried the Microsoft Workaround that you mentioned. There is another tool, but a bit more expensive that can detect wifi signals. Unfortunately following your steps to run as adminstrator didn't give me the option to run as administrator. The 'netcfg' command returned an error, but my WiFi all of a sudden came back to life.
