I do have some of my photos that I did send to friends and then saved that email that I sent them with photos on them in my hotmail saved spot. Life is good if you've got a few spare drives that are identical to the drives you're using. its helps me to retrieve my files and photos when I needed most. After resuming from sleep when I first explore or otherwise use data from the new HD there is an audible click that is louder than I would expect and... I used your suggested method, and it was perfect: kept all my screws, and i was able to, very easily, put them back in their correct place. It has reverted to a RAW file system instead of it's previous NTFS. My new pc with XP (and a friend's pc) know there's something there, but WExplorer can't see it.
As to why truecrypt is not in the repos: I'm not positive, but that level of encryption is illegal in many countries outside of the U.S. Generally, a computer with a lot of RAM can go for much longer than a computer with only a little RAM. Naturally those fans are blocked by whatever they're sitting on. Then it wouldn't rely upon the BIOS, so it should work fine for your external drive.
